ichabod-by-john-greenleaf-whittier-art-print-full-poem-beside-sir-thomas-more-tudor-portrait-painting-american-poetry-poster
Ichabod by John Greenleaf Whittier Art Print - Full Poem beside Sir Thomas More Tudor Portrait Painting - American Poetry Poster

John Greenleaf Whittier's Ichabod (1850), set in full beside a detail of Hans Holbein the Younger's Sir Thomas More. The left half of the sheet is the painting, cropped below the eyes: an unsmiling mouth and stubbled chin, a deep brown fur collar, the heavy gold chain of linked S shapes with its portcullis clasps and hanging Tudor rose, a black robe, crimson velvet sleeves and a hand closed on a folded note. To the right of a fine gold rule the portrait continues beneath a veil of deep wine red, which carries the poet's name in small gold capitals, the title in white italic serif, the short stanzas ranged left and the year, with the painter and work credited at the foot. So fallen! so lost! the light withdrawn which once he wore: Whittier wrote it in sorrow, not scorn, over a great statesman's compromise on slavery, asking his readers to walk backward, with averted gaze, and hide the shame. A sombre, handsome piece for a study, office, hallway or living room, and a pointed gift for a historian, lawyer or student of politics.

• PLEASE NOTE: Our prints come UNFRAMED as default. We now offer some framing options but they are marked as "FRAMED" in the dimensions drop down box when selecting your size. The frames we sell are not the ones in the mockup images, which are for display purposes only.

• PAPER: All our prints come on the highest quality art papers and are produced with a full range of 12 pigment inks so they will maintain their vibrant colours for decades to come. A quick explanation of our different paper stocks will follow: Glossy finishes are like what you would get with a photograph. Very reflective and very bright colours. Lustre is a beautiful finish which is somewhere between a Matte and a Gloss. If you're not sure what to choose then Lustre looks fantastic on al prints in our store. If you'd like your item printed onto a stiff watercolour-style paper which has a textured rougher surface then choose our "textured" option. Finally we have a 100% cotton paper which is extra sturdy, displays colours beautifully and is probably the best option if you want a classic Matte (non-reflective) finish.

• SIZE: Our prints come in a variety of sizes so please check measurements and choose carefully from the drop down list above. If you need custom dimensions not listed please contact us as we may be able to do a custom size.

• REFUNDS: All our prints are 100% guaranteed. If you're not thrilled with your print when it arrives just contact us and we'll accept the return up to a YEAR after purchase! Check through our feedback to see why nobody ever wants to return their prints!

• DELIVERY TIMES: Please note we are based in the United Kingdom. If you are ordering from the USA then deliveries will usually arrive in 2 weeks or less but please be aware that this is NOT guaranteed and they can sometimes take up to 4 weeks to arrive due to the irregularities of international transit so before ordering please bare that in mind. If you're in Europe delivery usually takes 1-2 weeks but occasionally as long as 3 weeks. If you're based in the UK like us then typical delivery times are 2-3 days after ordering.

• PACKAGING: Prints 12x8" inches and smaller will be packaged in flat, board-backed envelopes.
